On May 21, 2020 the Yukon Child & Youth Advocate Office launched a youth led video series project called Global Action Local Voices on Facebook and Instagram TV. The series is hosted by 16 year old Max Zimmermann. Max is a local youth who is passionate about journalism and social justice.
Global Action Local Voices focuses on international children’s rights and local children’s voices through the lens of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Each episode will highlight a different Article from the Convention.
“It is important for people of all ages to learn about children’s rights” states Annette King, Child and Youth Advocate. “Governments are obligated to uphold these rights…We are hoping the voices of young people will remind decision-makers about the value the lens of children’s rights provides to policy.”
This week’s episode focuses on Article 28:
“Every child has the right to an education. Primary education must be free and different forms of secondary education must be available to every child. Discipline in schools must respect children’s dignity and their rights. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.”
YCAO will produce at least two episodes a month. The next episode will focus on Article 31 – the right to play – featuring an exciting initiative led by Softball Yukon and supported by Jay’s Care Foundation and the Yukon Child and Youth Advocate Office.
