Child and Youth Advocate Releases Annual Report: "Making Space for Children's Rights"

October 16, 2024

The Yukon Child and Youth Advocate Office (YCAO) Annual Report 2023/24 was tabled in the Legislative Assembly on October 16, 2024.  The report, Making Space for Children’s Rights, highlights the work of the office from April 1st, 2023, to March 31st, 2024.

This year's report presents an overview of individual advocacy data, revealing the office's commitment to supporting young people.

In addition to individual advocacy, the report provides an overview of systemic reviews conducted by the YCAO, aimed at identifying areas for improvement and providing recommendations to Yukon government departments. These reviews are essential for ensuring that policies and practices align with the best interests of children.

A key feature of the report is a detailed introduction to the Progress Tracker launched by YCAO in 2023. The Progress Tracker allows YCAO, and Yukoners, to monitor the Yukon government’s response to recommendations from systemic reviews and the advancement of initiatives and policies affecting children and youth, ensuring transparency and accountability.

The report also details promising initiatives designed to elevate children's voices and rights, showcasing programs that actively engage young people in the decision-making processes that impact their lives.

Furthermore, the Advocate's office has conducted valuable engagement and collected input on the Child and Youth Advocate Act, and the report includes a timeline and summary of this engagement illustrating the breadth of community involvement in this critical review process.

“Thank you to everyone who has made referrals and provided feedback on the Act review,” said Annette King, the Child and Youth Advocate. “Your insights are invaluable and play a crucial role in shaping a stronger framework for protecting the rights of children and youth.” Reflecting on the collective efforts made in the past year, King added, “We must remain persistent in our mission. It is encouraging to see so many individuals and organizations stepping up for children's rights. Together, we can foster an environment where every child’s voice is heard and valued.”

The YCAO remains committed to advocating for the rights of children and youth and is excited to continue this vital work in the coming year.

The annual report will be available at the Yukon Child & Youth Advocate Office at 2070 2nd Avenue, and online at www.ycao.ca.
