November 12, 2024
In honour of National Child Day on November 20, 2024, the Yukon Child and Youth Advocate Office (YCAO) is excited to welcome the community to their annual open house from 10am to 12pm. The event will be hosted at the YCAO’s office located at 2070 2nd Avenue and promises to be an interactive and informative event for everyone. Yukoners are invited to come by and meet with the office’s Individual and Systemic Advocacy Representatives, and the Advocate herself, and learn more about the work of YCAO and their ongoing initiatives. Copies of the 2023-24 annual report, Making Space for Children’s Rights, will be available. There will be light refreshments, activities and door prizes available to be won.
Following the open house, at 1pm, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly will read a tribute to the YCAO and National Child Day.
“We know people care about children’s rights whether they are well-versed in the UNCRC or just inherently from their values and what is shown through their actions. We see this on a day-to-day basis in the work we do,” said Annette King, Child and Youth Advocate. “We are excited to host this year’s open house, and we hope to see everyone on National Child Day.”
Background of National Child Day
National Child Day recognizes a historic commitment to the world’s children: all governments carry the responsibility and are obligated to uphold children’s. National Child Day recognizes the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) by the United Nations General Assembly thirty-five years ago on November 20, 1989. Canada ratified the UNCRC two years later in December 1991. The UNCRC consists of 54 Rights that explain who children are, their rights and the responsibilities of government. All of the rights are connected and hold equal importance. This year’s theme for National Child Day is “this is me”, symbolizing a commitment to inclusion and non-discrimination.
