Trainings & Capacity-Building

What is CRIA?

A Child Rights Impact Assessment (CRIA) is a process used to examine how a law, policy, or decision may affect children and youth.

  • Helps identify potential impacts on children’s rights before changes are made

  • Supports more informed and thoughtful decision-making

Why YCAO Recommends CRIA

YCAO recommends the use of CRIAs across Yukon Government services to strengthen decision-making and ensure children’s rights and youth participation are prioritized.

Using CRIAs help to:
  • Assess how laws, policies, and decisions may affect children and youth

  • Support governments in meeting their obligations under children’s rights frameworks

  • Improve accountability and transparency in decision-making

  • Identify and address potential concerns early, reducing the need for individual and systemic advocacy

CRIAs help ensure children’s rights are considered early, rather than as an afterthought.
